TL;DR

Background & Motivation

Facility location is a classical problem in mechanism design: place a facility on a line to optimize some objective function over agents' preferences.

Traditional research has focused on two objectives: - Utilitarian: minimize the total distance from agents to the facility - Egalitarian: minimize the maximum distance

This paper instead studies the envy ratio objective — a fairness measure defined as the maximum ratio between any two agents' utilities:

In recent years, learning-augmented algorithms have attracted considerable attention: predictions provided by machine learning are used to enhance classical algorithms, aiming for improved performance when predictions are accurate (consistency) while maintaining reasonable worst-case guarantees when predictions are inaccurate (robustness).

Prior work (e.g., Ding et al. [10]) has studied facility location under the envy ratio objective but left open problems unresolved.

Method

Overall Architecture

The paper proposes three classes of mechanisms:

  1. Deterministic learning-augmented mechanism: \(\alpha\)-Bounding Interval Mechanism (\(\alpha\)-BIM)

When \(\alpha = 2\), the mechanism degenerates to the optimal deterministic mechanism without predictions.

Prediction-Free Randomized Mechanism

This resolves the open problem posed by Ding et al. [10]:

  • Prior best: approximation ratio of 2
  • This paper: approximation ratio of approximately 1.8944 (strict improvement)
  • A new randomization strategy is designed via a carefully constructed probability distribution, improving the worst-case guarantee without using any predictions

BAM (Bias-Aware Mechanism)

Core Innovation: incorporating prediction information into a randomized mechanism.

Key Findings
